5 Ways the Healthcare Field Is Going Green

From a growing demand for environmentally friendly drugs to demanding that landscaping at hospitals is green, the healthcare field is being taken to task to go green just like every other sector in the world.

From going paperless with bills to going paperless with options such as SCF finance cash flow suppliers, they are doing their part to comply. Luckily, there are other ways that hospitals and other sectors of the healthcare field can go green as well. If you’re looking for some options for your hospital, read on below for a few that might just help you out.

Always Purchase Green Cleaning Products

Hospitals should provide a safe clean environment for patients and staff alike. You can do that by purchasing green cleaning products to use. It is a fact that many commonly used cleaning products can be harmful to the health of patients, especially young children and developing fetuses. It has also been found that some of those cleaning products actually don’t work as well at banishing germs and bacteria as it was once thought they did. It’s best to go all green with the cleaning products for your healthcare facility, just to be on the safe side.

Change Up Your Hospital Meal Options

One of the easiest ways to go green, and it’s better for the patient’s health, is to serve less meat to the patients and the staff. Go with plant-based options instead, so that you’re doing your part as a hospital to help the environment. You can also choose to purchase antibiotic-free meat as well, which is better for the environment and healthier for patients and staff all at the same time. You can also substitute meat for locally grown produce so that you are supporting your community as well.

Take Advantage of Natural Lighting

Studies have shown that lighting in a hospital can have a direct impact on the health of the patients and the staff. Many modern hospitals are going to designs that allow more natural light to reach their staff, visitors, and patients. There are many different options for lighting in a hospital that will be environmentally friendly and help the health of your patients and staff at the same time. As always, natural lighting is best for everyone, if it’s possible and okay for the patient in question as well.

Conserve Water Where Possible

While this is a tough change for most healthcare facilities, you can make a difference a little at a time by conserving water where possible. Things like not leaving the water running in the kitchen and checking the bathrooms in patients’ rooms regularly for leaks and to make sure faucets aren’t left running can go a lot further than you think to help conserve water and cut down on your facility’s impact on the environment. Staff can help with this by keeping an eye out when they are in patient’s rooms as well and when in other areas of the hospital that use water.

Alert Your Staff

It’s impossible to go green with your healthcare facility if you don’t have your staff backing you. From the doctors to the nurses and from the CNA’s to the office staff make sure they all know that you are doing everything you can to make your facility green. You might be surprised at how many of them are more than willing to help you with your efforts.

These are just a few of the ways that your healthcare facility can go green today. From having the staff help to going paperless there’s plenty that can be done, you just have to be willing to implement it.
